Marine Champions Celebration Event

Thanks to Emily Stroud, Tim Ferrero, Anne Sayer, Sophie Evingar from @HantsIWWildlife and Trudi Williams @TrudiArtist for delivering a fantastic Marine Champions Celebration Event to CVA students and students from Ryde Academy, Ryde School and Bitterne Park School. Students got to hear about Tim’s experience as a scientist on Blue Planet and 23 years working at the natural history museum. Artist Trudi Williams showed students her inspired plastic chair sculpture as well as talking to them about all the different types of plastics which end up polluting our oceans. Then students got to try their hand at decorating their own recycled glass jars to create brilliant candle holders and Anne Sayer showed them some examples of hand made Christmas decorations and spoke about how to have a sustainable Christmas.

CVA Marine Committee

Castle View Academy have formed a Marine Committee who have received training and resources from Emily Stroud at the Wildlife trust. The committee is currently made up of 15 Year 8-11 students who are committed to raising awareness in a variety of ways, to help protect the Solent and environments in our community. So far the students have been creating resources to raise awareness about the importance of sea grasses and have taken a particular interest in reducing the amount of plastic which ends up in our oceans. Students have already implemented a challenge to the year 7 students to encourage them to help collect plastics from around our school. This competition will come to a end in time for the Marine Champions Celebration event on Monday 9th December when all the plastics collected will be donated to make a sculpture made from plastics designed by a local artist.

The Marine Champions celebration event will be hosted by Castle View Academy who will invite all the local schools involved in the project. The event will comprise of an exciting blue planet related local speaker, a sustainable gift activity and an opportunity for students to share their positive campaigns to 'Save the Solent'. There will also be some surprise exhibits related to the marine environment.

Emily Stroud leads the project on behalf of the Wildlife trust and she has done a brilliant job of inspiring, educating and encouraging our Marine Committees to think of ways to educate others to protect our beautiful local habitats. Emily visits the school on a regular basis providing the students with expert knowledge and an abundance of exciting resources which have supporting a much greater depth of knowledge around our local habitats.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have received funding from the National Lottery Heritage fund to run a four year long project called ‘Secrets of the Solent’. The aim of this project is to reconnect the Hampshire and the Isle of Wight’s coastal communities to the Solent and its incredible unique marine habitats and species. We will be helping local people to expand and gain an in-depth knowledge the Solent, bringing to light the hidden Secrets our inland sea has to offer. Without this understanding our Solent may become abandoned, polluted and barren leading to the loss of an vital environment and resource for our future generations.

Girls Networking Event

The Girls Network Matching event went down a storm. The event started with a motivational talk from Hayley Reay (Portsmouth Guildhall ). Our 15 girls then met a variety of local successful women through an organised networking event. By the end of the event all students was matched with their mentor. There were a lot of very happy faces. The girls network works with young women across the UK and aims to inspire and empower girls by matching them with an individual, professional female mentor who is dedicated to supporting our students to develop a range of professional skills to support them with their future.
