CASTLE VIEW ACADEMY COMMEMORATES WW1 CENTENARY

Last Thursday, students and staff at Castle View Academy came together to commemorate the men and women who have lost their lives at war in a moving Remembrance Day service.

Students across all year groups took part in the mid-morning service, lining up swiftly and silently in the school playground to show their respects.  Two students from each year group took it in turns to approach the school’s cenotaph, above which the Union Jack was flying high, and laid a wreath. Everyone then observed two minutes of silence to reflect on those who have bravely given their lives whilst fighting for their country.

Following this period of reflection, Head Boy William Doswell and Head Girl Lauren Turner each eloquently read a stanza from John McCrae’s In Flanders Field – a poem chosen especially to mark the centenary of the Great War. To bring an end to the service, Year 8 student Jordan Brooks played a moving rendition of the Last Post on the trumpet.

Year 7 student, Jake, said:
“I think today was a very thoughtful way of giving our thanks to the people who died for us.  We don’t often think of the individual soldiers, but each one of them is responsible for the freedom I enjoy today and that is why I’m grateful for the opportunity I had to bow my head and remember them.”

Christian Down, Principal of Castle View Academy, said:
“It is incredibly important that our young people take the time to consider and appreciate those who have secured our country’s freedom and paved the way for us to live as we do in the modern day. I am proud to say that all of our students played a part in our Remembrance Day service and treated the occasion with the respect it deserved.”
