Team Ineos - STEM activity

Year 8 girls were invited to a STEM activity at the headquarters of Team Ineos UK in Portsmouth.  The day consisted of several workshops comprising hands-on activities, lectures about growth mindset and the opportunity to build and test their own sail in a wind tunnel.

Every one had a lot of fun and enjoyed interviewing females in the STEM industry who are at the top of their careers. Some of these women worked on satellites, some worked as maintenance engineers and one was completing her PHD in air pollution.

Our girls learned that you don’t have to go to university to enjoy access to these careers as apprenticeships also offer a way into the STEM industries.  In their own words, “I thoroughly enjoyed today, it was very immersive and there were many opportunities to engage. I could relate to and understand the material. It was very interesting to learn about the different careers in Maritime and STEM.”

RAF Chef cooks up a storm!

Year Ten Food Technology students welcomed back RAF Chef, Alex Le Marquand this week.

Chef Alex spent the day working with two groups creating a range of dishes that would be suitable to meet the needs of many a design brief. Technical skills were at the forefront of the sessions as they allowed students the chance to experience filleting and pin-boning of fresh fish, deboning and portioning whole chickens and making their own Oreo flavoured ice cream, in the state of the art commercial ice cream maker.

Students particularly enjoyed the bread and pasta making classes, as well as making their own version of a Nando's dinner. It is safe to say that the biggest hit was the ice cream though!

Chef Alex is hoping to return in June where he intends to set up a field kitchen that would allow the students to experience catering for the masses, as well as coming back with his RAF colleagues to stage a "Ready, Steady, Cook" Competition. There seriously is a lot cooking in the Food Department this year! 🙂

Marine Champions Celebration Event

Thanks to Emily Stroud, Tim Ferrero, Anne Sayer, Sophie Evingar from @HantsIWWildlife and Trudi Williams @TrudiArtist for delivering a fantastic Marine Champions Celebration Event to CVA students and students from Ryde Academy, Ryde School and Bitterne Park School. Students got to hear about Tim’s experience as a scientist on Blue Planet and 23 years working at the natural history museum. Artist Trudi Williams showed students her inspired plastic chair sculpture as well as talking to them about all the different types of plastics which end up polluting our oceans. Then students got to try their hand at decorating their own recycled glass jars to create brilliant candle holders and Anne Sayer showed them some examples of hand made Christmas decorations and spoke about how to have a sustainable Christmas.
