Attendance

Attendance: Why It Really Matters

Starting secondary school is an exciting step, and good attendance from the very beginning makes a huge difference to a child’s success – academically, socially and emotionally.

Every Day Counts

Missing school might not seem like a big issue, but the impact adds up quickly:

· 90% attendance = around half a day missed every week

· 85% attendance = almost one full day missed every week

· By the end of a school year, this can mean weeks of lost learning

When pupils are in school every day, they:

· Learn more and make faster progress

· Feel more confident in lessons

· Build stronger friendships

· Develop positive routines and resilience

Attendance and Academic Outcomes

Research consistently shows that higher attendance leads to better results:

· Pupils with 95%+ attendance are significantly more likely to achieve strong GCSE outcomes

· Pupils with poor attendance are more at risk of:

o Falling behind in core subjects

          o Losing confidence

          o Disengaging from learning

Good attendance helps pupils keep up, rather than trying to catch up

Attendance and Future Earnings

Attendance doesn’t just affect school outcomes – it can influence future opportunities too.

Studies show that:

· Young people who achieve good qualifications are more likely to progress to further education, training or employment

· Higher qualifications are linked to higher lifetime earnings

· Regular attendance builds valuable life skills such as:

          o Reliability

          o Time-keeping

          o Commitment

Simply put, being in school regularly helps set children up for success later in life.

How We Celebrate Good Attendance

We believe attendance should be positive and rewarding, not just about rules.

Weekly Rewards

· Classes with excellent attendance are celebrated each week

· Pupils may earn certificates, recognition or small prizes

Termly Attendance Prizes

· Pupils with consistently strong attendance across the term are rewarded

· These rewards recognise commitment and effort over time

Attendance Streaks

· We celebrate attendance streaks every half term

· Pupils who attend every day for a half term receive special recognition

· Streaks help pupils stay motivated and proud of their achievement

Working Together

We understand that illness and exceptional circumstances happen, and we always encourage families to communicate with us.

By working together, we can:

· Support pupils to attend school regularly

· Remove barriers where possible

· Ensure every child gets the very best start to secondary school

Good attendance doesn’t just happen – it’s built day by day, and it’s worth celebrating.
